Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the questions we hear most from enterprise buyers evaluating RFID — covering technology basics, hardware, pricing, implementation, and support.
RFID Basics
What is RFID and how does it work?
RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) uses radio waves to automatically identify and track tagged objects. Each tag contains a microchip with stored data and an antenna. When a reader emits radio waves, the tag responds with its unique information — no line-of-sight required, unlike barcodes.
How is RFID different from barcodes?
RFID reads hundreds of tags per second without line-of-sight, while barcodes require a direct visual scan of one item at a time. RFID also survives dirt, moisture, and packaging that would block a barcode scan.
What is the difference between UHF, HF, and NFC?
UHF (860-960 MHz) offers the longest read range and fastest speed — best for warehouses and asset tracking. HF (13.56 MHz) has a shorter range but higher precision — common for access cards and library books. NFC is a short-range HF variant used for payments and mobile pairing.
Do RFID tags need batteries?
Most tags used in enterprise deployments are passive — they draw power from the reader's signal and need no battery, giving them an effectively unlimited lifespan. Active and battery-assisted tags exist for specialized long-range or real-time tracking applications.
Products & Hardware
Which RFID brands does SomasRO supply?
We are an authorized partner for Zebra Technologies, Impinj, Alien Technology, CAEN RFID, and HID Global — giving you access to certified, warranty-backed hardware rather than unbranded imports.
Can RFID tags be attached to metal or liquid-filled items?
Yes, with the right tag construction. Metal-mount tags use a spacer layer to function correctly on metal surfaces, and specialized on-liquid tags are available for items with high water content.
What is the typical read range for a fixed reader?
UHF fixed readers typically read tags from 3-12 metres depending on antenna gain, tag type, and environment. We calculate expected read range for your specific installation during the site assessment.
Do you sell hardware only, or software too?
Both. SomasRO supplies certified hardware and builds the complete software layer — our proprietary platform, cloud dashboard, and custom applications — so every project is delivered end-to-end by one partner.
Pricing & Contracts
How much does an RFID system cost?
Costs vary widely based on scope — tag volume, reader count, software requirements, and integration complexity. A focused single-site deployment typically starts in the low tens of thousands of USD; enterprise-wide rollouts scale from there. We provide a detailed, itemized quote after a free consultation.
What is the ROI of implementing RFID?
Most clients see positive ROI within 6-12 months through faster audits, reduced asset loss, and labor savings. We model your specific ROI using real numbers from your operation during the free consultation — see our ROI Calculator for a starting estimate.
Do you offer financing or phased payment options?
Yes. We structure payment schedules around project milestones, and can discuss phased rollouts that spread investment across multiple budget cycles for larger deployments.
Is there a minimum project size?
No fixed minimum, but most enterprise engagements start with a pilot covering one facility or department (typically 500-2,000 tagged items) before scaling company-wide.
Implementation
How long does an RFID implementation take?
A focused pilot (one warehouse or department) typically takes 4-6 weeks from kick-off to go-live. Enterprise-wide deployments across multiple facilities generally take 3-6 months, delivered in phases.
Does RFID integrate with our existing ERP system?
Yes. Our platform integrates with SAP, Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics, and most enterprise ERP systems via REST API or direct middleware connectors. We also build custom integrations for proprietary systems.
Will RFID disrupt our current operations during rollout?
We phase installations to minimize disruption — typically working outside peak hours or in zones sequentially, so your operation continues running throughout the deployment.
Do you provide training for our staff?
Yes. Every implementation includes hands-on training for the staff who will use the handheld readers, dashboard, and reporting tools, plus admin training for your IT team.
Industries & Compliance
Which industries benefit most from RFID?
Healthcare, government, manufacturing, retail, warehousing & logistics, and education see the highest returns — but any organization with physical assets, inventory, or people to track can benefit.
Can RFID help with government audit compliance?
Yes. Our fixed asset management solution maintains continuous, audit-ready registers that satisfy government and corporate governance requirements, eliminating the scramble of manual annual audits.
Do you support Arabic-language reporting and interfaces?
Yes. Our software platform is fully bilingual with native Arabic and English interfaces, including RTL layout support and Arabic-language reporting.
Support & Maintenance
Do you provide ongoing support after go-live?
Yes. Every client has access to our technical support team, and we offer tiered maintenance agreements including preventive maintenance, spare parts, and 24/7 critical support for Enterprise SLA clients.
Do you stock spare parts locally?
Yes. We maintain spare parts inventory in both Saudi Arabia and Egypt for all products we sell, avoiding cross-border shipping delays for replacements.
What happens if hardware fails under warranty?
We manage the full manufacturer warranty process on your behalf and can provide loaner or replacement hardware for critical systems while a warranty claim is processed.
